  • Planting the Seed for Environmental Law

Jennifer was invited by EXP, The Opportunity Engine to lead a class about environmental law for Lawndale High School’s California Coastal Oceanography. EXP is a nonprofit founded by the maritime industry, bringing industry and schools together to provide career opportunities to students from underserved communities in Southern California. - February 5, 2020

  • Making a Difference During This Pandemic

When the California Lawyers Association wanted to spotlight lawyers helping out in the community during these uncertain times, Jennifer was touched to be asked to share her experience handing out school breakfasts and lunches at her local YMCA.  She was featured in the e-article: “Look for The Helpers.” - May 2020

  • Teaching Interview Skills

Megan and Suzanne helped the Los Angeles-based non-profit EXPerience by conducting mock interviews of high school juniors and teaching them what to expect from an interview, how to respond to challenging questions, using positive body language, staying focused, the importance of cover letters, and how to have confidence through the process.  EXPerience was founded in 1999 by maritime industry leaders to bridge the gap between the port industry’s need for a skilled workforce and a local high school’s struggle to graduate students.  Since then, it has grown from a single high school to 10 schools in four school districts and engages industry sectors beyond maritime and international trade.

  • Cleaning Up Our Waters

To celebrate Coastal Cleanup Day, we split up, with Jennifer heading to the confluence of the Arroyo Seco and the L.A. River, while Megan headed out to Lewis McAdams River Park.  The L.A. River was in desperate need of attention and dozens of volunteers spent several hours pulling food waste, trash, tennis and golf balls, straws, bottles and cans, clothes and industrial waste from the stream and riverbeds.   Lewis McAdams Park was far more scenic and peaceful, but that didn’t stop Megan from pulling a fair amount of plastic products from its waters.  If you’ve never done a river or beach clean-up before, please do.  It will provide quite an education, and you’ll feel good about how much trash you kept out of our waterways.

  • Urban Farming

Following the ABA Water Law Conference, Jennifer joined other members of the American Bar Association to work at The Urban Farm at Stapleton in Denver, Colorado.  The Urban Farm was founded in 1993 as a means to encourage youth to respect people, animals, plants, and the environment while helping them to find a home for their interests and passions.  We received a tour of its greenhouse, met various animals, and cleaned out a storage barn, while enjoying the springtime weather.

  • Addressing Food Insecurity

Family and friends joined us at the L.A. Regional Food Bank on February 23rd for our first volunteer effort of 2019. We joined dozens of others to help address the food insecurity faced by thousands of Southern Californians every month. Collectively, we packed hundreds of boxes of dried food goods so that families in need could have several days of pasta, canned fruit and veggies, tuna, milk, juice and cereal. It was non-stop work, but a lot of fun as well.

  • Judging Student Negotiation Skills

Jennifer judged the CLA Environmental Law Section’s Annual Student Negotiations Competition, hosted by UCLA School of Law.  Teams of students were given real-world fact patterns and asked to negotiate mock environmental disputes, while being judged on their ability to recognize their clients’ needs, identify areas of potential agreement, and work towards resolutions.

  • State Bar Student Negotiations Competition

Jennifer judged the CLA Environmental Law Section’s Annual Student Negotiations Competition, hosted by UCLA School of Law.  Along with other attorneys, judges, and mediators in the environmental law field, Jennifer observed two-person teams of California law students engage in a mock negotiation of environmental disputes based upon real world cases.  Judges provided feedback to the students on how their demeanor, strategies, and results would fare in actual mediations, and offered advice about the environmental law field.

  • Having Fun At The Street Fair
